Based upon extensive research with law enforcement, gangs, inmates, migrants, and addicts, an exposé on fentanyl trafficking, and its effect on all walks of life.
Action-thriller “King Ivory, which had its world premiere at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, is set to get a theatrical release in the U.S.
Saban Films has acquired North American rights to the film — written and directed by John Swab (“Ida Red,” “Candy Land”) and starring Ben Foster and Melissa Leo — and teamed with Roadside Attractions for a national theatrical release later in 2025. Universal Pictures will handle all other territories.
Also starring James Badge Dale (“The Departed”), Michael Mando (“Better Call Saul”), Rory Cochrane (“Black Mass”), Ritchie Coster (“The Dark Knight”), George Carroll (“The Town”), Sam Quartin “(Candy Land”), newcomer Jasper Jones and Oscar nominee Graham Greene (“Dances with Wolves”), “King Ivory” is described as a “fentanyl expose” based on extensive research with law enforcement, gangs, inmates, migrants and addicts.
The film was produced by Jeremy Rosen for his Oklahoma-based Roxwell Films.
Set against the backdrop of the opioid epidemic as fentanyl floods the market, “King Ivory” follows Tulsa drug cop Layne West (Dale) whose son Jack (Jones) becomes an addict. In conjunction with his partner, Ty (Carroll) and FBI counterpart, Beatty (Cochrane), West makes it his mission to take down those responsible, including the Mexican cartel’s local shot-caller, Ramón Garza (Mando), Indian Brotherhood War Chief, Holt Lightfeather (Greene) and the local Irish Mob family outfit, led by George “Smiley” Greene (Foster), along with his mother, Ginger (Leo), and uncle, Mickey (Coster). As Holt educates West: “The cartels want your kids, the next generation, who want what is new, and fentanyl is new.”
“John and I are grateful to Saban for a wide theatrical release of our beloved ‘King Ivory,’ which entertains while presenting an insider’s look at the horrific effect of fentanyl via a stellar ensemble cast performance,” said Rosen.
“This marks our second collaboration with John and Jeremy, and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Jonathan Saba, co-president of Saban Films. “John has an incredible gift for crafting raw, powerful stories, and ‘King Ivory’ is the full realization of his talent. It’s a relentless, propulsive film, with nonstop action and is driven by tour-de-force performances that are electrifying and deeply human.”
Added Roadside Attractions co-presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff: “Roadside is excited to be bringing John’s Swab’s new film to theatres, as it is a riveting, kinetic and utterly up-to-the-minute contemporary thriller set in the world of international drug cartels.”
“King Ivory” marks the eighth collaboration between Swab and Rosen, who are now repped by CAA, and have several other projects in development.
Saba negotiated the “King Ivory” acquisition on behalf of Saban, with WME Independent on behalf of the filmmakers.
